There is no place to escape from this world anymore. Where can people hide? The recognition of gypsies as victims of the Nazi holocaust, half a century on, was a watershed for the new generation of gypsies who are striving to find a place in the newly-formed European Union. ‘The Track’ backtracks with Lalla, a gypsy activist, who is fighting for official compensation for Lilly, another gypsy woman and survivor of the Auschwitz concentration camp. The short documentary film includes very intimate scenes thanks to the filmmaker’s ten-year contact with Netherlands’ gypsy community.
The Westerbork was the gateway to the extermination camp countless Jewish, Sinti, and Roma families with parents, grandparents, and children were methodically, systematically, and ruthlessly killed in gas chambers. Of the 247 Sinti and Roma taken away from Camp Westerbork, only 32 would survive the war. On 3 August 1944, Settela Steinbach was killed in the gas chambers of Auschwitz-Birkenau.
